Morton West
Freshman Mentor Program

"It's not just a just a shirt, it's more than that." - Ruth Rico '18

Mission and Goals

Our mission is to introduce the freshmen of MWHS to the high school experience. We will encourage and empower the students through our commitment to the program. We will challenge the freshmen to strive for excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and school citizenship. We will lay the foundation for our freshmen to assume future leadership roles and help facilitate the process through role modeling.

+ To provide our freshmen with guidance, assistance, and support.
+ To help our freshmen on their pursuit of academic excellence.
+ To promote the benefits of staying very active in the school setting.
+ To help foster positive and meaningful relationships between our freshmen and their fellow students, teachers, and all members of the MWHS community.
+ To help reduce the amount of poor choices that contribute to truancy and failure.
+ To serve as exemplary representatives of MWHS.

Role Models
We make sure freshmen can look up to us and feel comfortable being themselves around us. Our wide variety of athletes, high academic achieving students and club members and even officers are great leaders.

Tutors
Making sure freshmen keep up with their academic goals is a guideline for FMPs. Grades come first. We help our freshmen with study tips and what we remember from taking freshmen year classes to eliminate I's and E's.

Friends
Building strong relationships with freshmen and making sure we're seen as equals and never superior to them is essential. We are their friends, not teachers!

Student Leaders

Serve as the chief representative of the program, runs monthly meetings, meets with faculty coordinators regularly, promotes positive relationships between the program’s members and the school community, and helps the program maintain a solid, positive reputation. They will also serve as a daily supervisor.
